Privacy

Beakful is a small game made in Newfoundland by Fun Puffin. We collect as little as we can, and here's exactly what happens to your information.

Last updated October 3, 2026

The short version

  • Your progress, scores and outfits are saved on your device, with a backup on our server under a code only you have. You can delete the backup any time.
  • The game sends anonymous play stats (which levels, how runs end, what gets used) so we can make it better. No names, no cookies, no tracking. You can turn them off in Records.
  • If you send feedback, we get your message, and your email only if you choose to leave it.
  • The leaderboard is opt-in: only if you join does the name you pick, with your best scores, show on it.
  • Your email is optional: give it to us and we'll send you your save code, and Beakful news only if you tick that box. Every email has a link to unsubscribe or remove it.
  • Tips are optional and handled by Stripe. We never see your card details.
  • We never sell or share your information, and there are no ads.

On your device

Your progress, best scores, stars, records, outfits, your puffins' names, and your language and sound settings are saved in your browser's storage on your device. Clearing this site's data in your browser erases them from the device, but the backup below can bring them back.

On iPhone and iPad, Safari may clear a website's saved data after about a week without a visit. Adding Beakful to your Home Screen (Share, then "Add to Home Screen") and playing from there avoids that.

Your progress backup (save code)

So you never lose your puffin, after your first run the game backs up what it has saved on your device to our server, and keeps that backup up to date after each run. That's your levels, stars, scores, records, outfits, the names you give your puffins, your daily streak and settings, and your leaderboard sign-in if you've joined. There's no sign-up, and nothing about you: no real name, no email, no location.

The backup is filed under a random 12-character code, which you'll find in Records. Type it in on another device, or after your browser clears the game, to get everything back. We keep only a scrambled (hashed) form of the code, but anyone who has the code itself can restore that progress, so keep it to yourself.

A backup is kept until 2 years after it was last updated. You can delete it any time in Records, under Save code; that also stops the automatic backup on that device until you make a new code. Copies of the game played elsewhere never make backups.

Anonymous play stats

When you play at beakful.funpuffin.com or in the Beakful app, the game sends anonymous play stats to our server so we can see which levels are too hard and what people enjoy:

  • When you open the game: your language, your type of device (phone, tablet or computer), whether you opened it from your Home Screen, roughly how many runs you've played, and whether you came from a friend's challenge link.
  • For each run: the level, how it ended (made it home, caught by a seal, and so on), how far you got, your score, how long it took, the fish you delivered, and which try it was.
  • The tutorial: how far you got, and whether you finished it.
  • What you use: for example opening the Wardrobe, saving a postcard or sharing.
  • If something breaks: the error message and where in the game's code it happened.

Each visit gets a random tag so events from the same visit can be counted together. It isn't saved on your device and is forgotten when you close the game, so visits can't be linked to each other or to you. We don't use cookies, advertising IDs or tracking tools, and we don't record your name, your puffins' names, your email or your IP address with these stats.

You can turn stats off at any time: open Records and untick "Share anonymous play stats". If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, stats start off. Nothing is sent when you play a copy of the game anywhere else.

Feedback you send

If you use the Feedback screen, we receive what you write, the face you pick, and your email address if you choose to give one (only so we can reply). To help us understand it, a note comes with the same kind of details as the stats: the level you last played and how that run ended, your type of device, your language, how many runs you've played, and the game's version.

Please don't put anything in a note that you'd rather we didn't have.

The leaderboard (only if you join)

If you choose to join the leaderboard, the name you pick and your best score on each level (for each sea) are shown to everyone who looks at it. To know which scores are yours, your device makes a random player code and a secret that only it knows; we keep the code and a scrambled version of the secret, nothing else about you.

No real names, please. Names are checked for rude words, and we may hide any name or score that isn't in the spirit of the game. You can change your name or leave at any time in Records, then Leaderboard. Leaving deletes your name and scores from it; otherwise they're kept for as long as the leaderboard runs. Copies of the game played elsewhere never post scores.

Sharing

Nothing is shared unless you tap Share. A result link includes your score, the level, and your puffin's name if you've given it one, so your friend can see who challenged them. Postcards and result pictures are made on your device.

The share buttons open your device's share menu, or the service you pick (X, Facebook, WhatsApp or email). What happens there is covered by their own privacy policies.

In the iPhone and iPad app

The app is the same game, so everything on this page applies to it too (the play stats also note that you're playing in the app). On top of that:

  • iCloud: the app also keeps a copy of your save in your own iCloud account, so a new iPhone or iPad picks up where you left off. It's stored by Apple in your iCloud; we can't see it.
  • Game Center: if you're signed in to Game Center, your best scores are posted to Beakful's Game Center leaderboards, which Apple runs under its own privacy policy. We don't receive your Game Center name or ID.
  • No tips in the app: the app has no payments of any kind.

Your email (optional)

In Records, under Save code, you can give us your email. We use it for two things only:

  • Your save code. We email you your code, and again if you ask ("Forgot your code?"). To do that we keep your email with your code.
  • Beakful news, only if you tick the box. A few emails a year about new levels and updates. We keep a record of when you agreed and the exact wording you agreed to, as Canada's anti-spam law asks.

Every email we send has a link to stop the news and a link to remove your email from our list. Deleting your backup in Records also removes the code we kept with your email. Emails are sent through Resend, an email service that may process your address in the United States. Your email is stored with your backup in Canada (Central), and kept until you remove it, or for 2 years after your last change if you're not signed up for news. We never sell it or use it for anything else.

Tips (Support Beakful)

Beakful is free. If you choose to leave a tip, you pay on a page run by Stripe, our payment processor. Stripe handles your card details and email address under its own privacy policy; we never see your card number. We receive the amount, the date, and the email address Stripe uses to send your receipt, which we keep for our tax records and don't use for anything else.

Refunds: tips are voluntary, but if something went wrong (a wrong amount, a tip twice), tell us within 30 days and we'll refund it. Reply to your Stripe receipt, or use the Feedback screen in the game.

Where it's kept, and for how long

  • Stats and feedback are stored in a database run by Supabase, in Canada (Montreal).
  • The website is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, it handles your IP address to deliver the pages; we don't keep it.
  • Only Fun Puffin can see the stats and feedback, through a password-protected page.
  • Stats are deleted automatically after 2 years, and feedback, including any email address, after 1 year. Leaderboard names and scores stay until you leave it.
  • We never sell or share this information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Children

Beakful is for everyone. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you're under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before leaving an email address in a feedback note.

Your choices

  • Turn off stats: Records, then untick "Share anonymous play stats".
  • The leaderboard: change your name or leave it in Records, then Leaderboard. Leaving removes your name and scores.
  • Delete feedback you sent: send a note through the Feedback screen with the same email address (or tell us enough to find your note) and ask us to delete it. We will.
  • Stats: they're anonymous, so we can't pick out the ones from you, but they're deleted after 2 years.
  • Questions: send them through the Feedback screen with your email, and we'll reply. There's also a support page, with answers to common questions and a button that opens the Feedback form.

Changes

If anything here changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
